The MacArthur Study Bible

The MacArthur Study Bible does a very thorough and complete job of explaining Scripture. The difficult passages are dealt with in a fundamental but detailed way that allows the reader to get a better understanding of what the Scriptures are really saying to him or her.

The verse (Romans 1:17):
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

In this verse Paul is referring to the gospel of Christ – the good news of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection and the implications of the gospel to everyone who believes the message.

MacArthur brings out an interesting perspective regarding this phrase. MacArthur states that perhaps this statement is a parallel to “everyone who believes” from Romans 1:16. So in this perspective the righteousness of God is revealed to each person who puts their faith in Christ.

In addition, MacArthur also leaves room for another interpretation of this phrase by connecting it to the Old Testament reference of the “The just shall live by faith” (Hab 2:4). In this interpretation, the valid argument is that God’s righteousness is continuing to be revealed in the faithful to God from the beginning to the end. The life that one lives by faith displays what God requires for His righteousness to be accounted to him or her.
